Mouchoirs de Cholet

Mouchoirs de Cholet

From the 9th century, the inhabitants of Cholet wove flax canvases, then sold on the markets. Handkerchiefs are made in 1736. Cholet is also known as the capital of the handkerchief.

Why is this handkerchief red and white?

The red handkerchief of Cholet was created in 1900 by an industrialist of Cholet Léon Maret, inspired by the song « The red handkerchief of Cholet » of Théodore Botrel (link youtube). Red represents the blood shed by the Vendeans during the Vendée wars and white represents royalty. This handkerchief has become the emblem of the city of Cholet.

Currently, this handkerchief is still woven in the workshop of the Textile Museum of Cholet in a traditional way and then made by the staff of the ESAT Arc-en-Ciel, a facility providing medical and social support by offering professional activities to adults with disabilities.
